The Great Polyglot Bibles

Book Club of California, 1966. Printed at the Allen Press. Folio [19] leaves unpaginated, loose signatures in heavy handmade paper wrap, laid in purple cloth covered folding box with printed title label. Limited to 400 copies, with a leaf from the 1517 Complutensian Bible, the first multilingual printed edition of the entire Bible: the leaf is printed in Hebrew, Greek, Latin, and Aramaic. With an essay by Basil Hall. The box spine shows some slight wear at foot (these were not the most skookum boxes ever made). Book is fine/as issued. With prospectus and card explaining the edition’s unbound format, one the Allens used for several of their own publications. $1000

Nicolas Jenson, Printer

J.H. Nash 1926. Commentary of Henry Lewis Bullen. Edition of 207 copies, each with a leaf from Plutarch’s Vitae (vol. 2) printed by Jenson in 1478. The leaf in this copy shows minor foxing. As with many copies from the edition, the unidentified paper (Strathmore, according to the 1937 Nash catalogue) shows signs of foxing/darkening throughout. Bound in quarter vellum with marbled paper over boards. Spine and board faces in good condition but there is wear at tips. $650
