A type specimen book displaying the nine roman and 11 italics faces, and sizes, that will form HM's core repertoire for the next five to ten years. It is an opportunity to use a few faces HM has have not actually printed before, and to refine our work with some others.

Each face is displayed on a full page (8 x 12 inches), in three text sizes. There is a three-page forward written by the printer, discussing why these faces have been chosen, and how they will be used (and printed) at the studio. The foreword also touches on the importance of paper, and how it can affect a type's appearance, especially when printed on the handpress. To illustrate the point, and for our own benefit as a future reference, a handful of copies will be issued with all of the samples printed on three different papers (Guarro laid - the paper used for the entire edition - plus Arches Wove and our custom handmade sheet from Reg Lissel), bound together sequentially, for comparison's sake.

To add an element of bibliographic intrigue, and make the endeavor more interesting for everyone, the text used to display the types will be H.P. Lovecraft's short story "The Horror at Red Hook." We have appreciated the slow but constant trickle of requests for more Lovecraft since our edition of Innsmouth in 2005, all from people not otherwise aware of HM's work (indeed, those familiar with HM were bemused or befuddled by the book's publication), but appreciative of our mode of production. The story presented was chosen simply because it had the number of words needed to fill the space required to show the types.
