TWO LOVERS ON A BENCH
By Samuel M. Johnson, Etching by Mariko Ando
To celebrate 20 years of marriage (to the same person) in the spring of 2009, HM issued a purely hors de commerce new book, Two Lovers on a Bench. The text, by the actor Samuel M. Johnson, is taken from the Philip Glass/Robert Wilson opera Einstein on the Beach. The colophon tells the story: ![]() Mariko Ando had a solo exhibition of new works at Vancouver's Eastwood Onley Gallery in April, which was unfortunate timing since the frontis etching couldn't be included without giving away the project prematurely. It will, however, be included in future exhibitions of her work. To make up for the exigencies of secrecy, HM collaborated with Mariko to create a broadside for inclusion in the show. Alice in Wonderland has been a constant inspiration to Mariko for a number of years, with Alice and rabbits being recurrent themes. The broadside, incorporating a brief extract from the book and an original illustration, was printed on dampened HM paper (13 x 18 inches; detail shown at right) in an edition of 30 copies, each spot-colored in red India ink by the artist. Copies can be purchased ($50) directly from the artist. Return to New & Upcoming. HEAVENLY MONKEY |
