Display text and title page printed letterpress in hand-set Shadow, Centaur and Arrighi. Six engravings by Minegishi (title page & one for each chapter opening) printed from the original blocks. Proofs of each engraving—printed on handmade gampi and signed by the artist—overlay each chapter opening. Covers of handmade "shadow" paper combining black cotton and white hosho pulps, made by Ann Vicente. Side-stab binding, with black vellum spine cap, by Simone Mynen. Heavenly Monkey Studio Editions was conceived as the imprint's test department, through which we would issue an occasional series of experiments in book design and construction. Design, typesetting and printing were to be made expedient through the use of digital design and printing technologies (allowing us to tackle longer texts than we would generally undertake printing with hand-set type), intermingled with more traditional printing techniques for illustrations, display text, etc. Each of the "proto editions" in the series would be limited to a handful of copies, just enough to test the various elements' application to multiple copies.

For better or worse, our publishing activities have expanded (in both scope and number) beyond what we'd anticipated even just two years ago. Starting in 2005, the Studio Editions imprint is being revised into Heavenly Monkey Editions—books that will be produced outside the studio, with HM's participation limited to simply acting as publisher.
