By John Newlove
The Private Press of Robert Reid & Takao Tanabe, 1962

Colophon: Three hundred copies printed by Robert R. Reid & Ib Kristensen.

Description: 6.25 x 11.85 inches, [36 pp]. Signatures sewn and pasted into paper wrap (grave sirs: john newlove's poems on front, sirs: john newloves grave poems on back) printed in pale blue and green, using 120-point wood type (Futura).

Notes: Newloves first published collection of poetry. Interior drawing of of the poet by Roy Kiyooka (uncredited).

In the early '70s, while living in Montreal, Reid was introduced to William Hoffer, who was intending to establish himself as a bookseller in Vancouver. Reid gave Hoffer a number of unbound copies of Grave Sirs:, lacking the cover. Hoffer had a facsimile printed offset, and issued a number of copies. In addition to the difference in printing method, these copies can be differentiated by the cover's rough texture, where the original used a smooth sheet.
