| A project proposed for publication by the tony U.S. retailer. Robert assembled a dummy using Letraset and reproduced images for several initial pages and an introductory pamphlet.
Limitation: This edition is limited to 525 signed copies, of which this is no. --- [The scheme was to have each of the contributing illustrators sign the colophon.]
Description: Elephant folio (19 by 24.5 inches). A traycase box, with the preliminary material and each story printed and sewn as a large single-signature pamphlet (i.e. 11 pamphlets total, 17 by 22 inches). The traycase is covered in linen, with marbled paper on the front board and a large onlaid NM in metal. With a paper-covered slipcase.
Full full text of the title pages reads as follows: "Fairy Tales from Various Sources translated by Andrew Lang with a Foreword by Stanley Marcus & an Introduction by Cary Wilkins. The Whole Newly Illustrated by Michael Nicholson, Mimi Vang Olsen, Ian Miller, Michael Whelan, John Kind and Less Marshall in a Limited Edition. Designed by Robert Reid and Printed at Mount Vernon by the Press of A. Colish. Published by Neiman-Marcus, Dallas, Christmas 1981."
The dummy is yet another example of Robert's ability to conceive of projects that will test even the deepest pockets' courage. Alas, the courage was lacking in this case.
