News & Notes

A project Robert initially conceived for McGill to publish, about Canadian money. However, because all Canadian banknotes issued remain current, by law they could not be reproduced (i.e. in a book) without an Act of Parliament. Overwhelmed in the face of this obstacle, the press declined to pursue the project. A few years later Reid revived the project, changing the focus to American notes, to coincide with that country's bicentennial, and proposed it to Abrahms. A single dummy was created for the original Canadian proposal, using Letraset and tipped-in banknotes, showing about 20 pages of preliminary layouts. Proposed contents included The Development of Banking; A Commentary of the Social History of the Notes, the Factors Affecting their Issue, and the use of Illustrations and Vignettes; A note on Printing Techniques; and A Definitive Checklist. A second dummy, for a more traditional trade book, was created and submitted to Abrahms, but never returned.

Description: The dummy measures 14 by 19.5 inches, and was sewn up from half-sheets of Robert's beloved Guarro mouldmade paper. The dummy was bound by Vianney Bélanger in a mottled calf skin, with blind tooling on the boards along the spines and edges. With a matching slipcase, edged in leather with marbled paper sides.
