KARA SIEVEWRIGHT
Author, artist, zine publisher
Kara Sievewright's first zine was an extended text recouting her experiences during the protests that accompanied the 2001 meeting of G8 members in Genoa. Titled The Bruises on My Thighs are Shaped Like a Map of Italy, the 48-page zine manages to be a simultaneously dispassionate and harrowing report of the event. This was followed by three shorter zines, each presenting one of her uniquely oblique short stories accompanied by her own illustrations. All three reflected Kara's interest in simple techniques for creating multiples, and in materials and designs that surpass the most zines' copy-and-staple approach. A Small Shimmer of Things (Maker of Nets Press 2003, 10 pp, 4 x 3 inches, side-stab binding, approximately 45 copies) was photocopied and then silkscreened in red, black and white. The Girl With the Mask of a Crow (Maker of Nets Press 2003, 11 pp, 4.5 x 5.5 inches, side-stab binding, approximately 60 copies) was a reduced facsimile photocopied from original etched plates (which had been printed in an edition of 10 sets). The City of the Birds (Flags And Crows Press 2002, 12 pp, 4.75 x 3.75 inches, sewn in printed wrap, 33 numbered copies) was printed in red & black, from linocuts and rubber type. Completely reworked versions of these three stories were collected in a single edition published by Heavenly Monkey in 2004, in a letterpress edition of 30 copies that went out of print upon publication. Kara is currently working on her Master's Degree in Creative Writing
at the University of British Columbia. In addition to her creative writing
she frequently contributes articles to publications covering labor and
poverty issues. Address: 657 East 12th Ave, Vancouver, B.C. V5T 2H7 HEAVENLY MONKEY
