News & Notes

Colophon: Life in the Country has been typeset in Bulmer Roman and Italic, a typeface contemporary with Jane Austen's time. The printing was done on a Xerox laser colour printer on Classic Crest book paper. This first edition of 10 copies has been privately printed by Robert R. Reid, of which this is No. --- [signed by F.J. Welland and Robert]

Description: Full title is Life In the Country - A Collection of Quotations by Jane Austen, Accompanying Reproductions of Silhouettes Cut by her Nephew James Edward Austen-Leigh. Edited by F. Welland, E. Sutherland and J. Ray.

Square octavo, [106 pp]. Sewn and cased in natural linen, marbled endpapers, image inset to front board & spine label.

Notes: Freydis Welland is the great-great-granddaughter of Jane Austen's favorite nephew, James Edward Austen-Leigh. She inherited these silouettes he had cut through her mother. Welland approached Eric Swanick, special collections librarian at Simon Fraser University, about possibly publishing the silouettes in some form, and he referred her to Robert.

There have been three printings of this title, identifiable by the edition size: the first consisted of 10 copies; the second of 40 copies; and the third of [TBD] copies.

Issue price: $185
